Rivers of want flood the space that you kept [poem]

Before you entered my life,
My heart did not note your absence,
So why should it feel it now that you are gone?

Days pass one after another,
All of them shapeless, senseless —
Without meaning.

Rivers of want flood the space that you kept
But I just tread water, waiting for
The warmth of your return to stem the tide.

What was I before you?
I struggle to dredge up my past, but my life
Before you is murky, gray as forgotten memories.
